The technology used in automobile industry has been improvised over years and has made the lives of automobile customers easy. One such aspect of advanced technology is ADAS(Advanced Driving Assistance Systems). Now what exactly is ADAS from the perspective of automobile industry? ADAS is a technology used to guide users while primarily involving driving and parking functions. ADAS uses a safe machine interface and increases the car and road safety. ADAS is completely automated technology and uses cameras, sensors and other equipment to detect nearby obstacles and driver errors and respond accordingly.

HISTORY:

The usage of ADAS first began with the introduction of anti-brake locking system 50 years ago. Early ADAS features included electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and blind-spot information systems. These systems are affected by mechanical alignment adjustments or damage from collisions. The frequency of collisions and accidents led the manufacturers to realise the importance of auto-reset systems for the automobiles after a mechanical alignment occurred.

WORKING:

The ADAS system mainly relies on the data that describes the outer environment that surrounds the vehicle. This feature differentiates the ADAS system to a DAS(Driver Assistance System) which relies on internal environment. ADAS relies on inputs from multiple sources like Automotive imaging, LIDAR, radar, image processing, computer vision and in-car networking. Other forms of network include “Vehicle to Vehicle Communication(V2V) “ and “Vehicle to Infrastructure Communications (V2i)” The V2V communication involves interaction with other cars and to avoid collisions with other vehicles. Modern cars have ADAS systems integrated into their electronics. The manufacturers can also have the options to add these systems into the vehicles.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:

One of the main advantages of ADAS systems is to reduce human made errors and accidents and to provide safety to both the vehicle as well as the driver. The ability of the ADAS system to respond accordingly to the situation is what makes it one of the most importantly and inseparable features in the modern automobile industry. The ADAS tech has been such a relief for the manufacturers looking to improve their product quality and to the users providing them safety and assurance.

However, as advantageous as ADAS can be, the tech had its own shortcomings, one of the main complaints with the ADAS systems is the inability to detect obstacles that are closer to the ground level leading to damage of certain vehicle components, there are also complaints about its ability to provide active parking assistance and its ability to provide assistance during collisions.

Although it is safe to assume that the ADAS system has enhanced the safety standards of automobiles, still some doubts exist about the access to the technology which the experts are working on...
