Engineer’s Day is celebrated across the nation on 15 September to pay tribute to one of India’s greatest minds and finest engineer Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagondam Visvesvaraya


Mokshagondam Visevesvaraya was born in a

small town in Karnataka called Muddenahalli

located near Chikkaballapur on 15 September 1861.

Sir.M V started off his journey as an engineer after topping the Poona college of engineering, he was directly recruited by the Government of Bombay and was appointed as an assistant engineer in the public works department.


Later on he went out to become India’s most eminent civil engineer, economist, statesman and also a nation-builder.


Sir M V was the creator of the automatic Sluice Gate, which was the technology later used in the most famous KRS Dam ( Located in Karnataka) and Tigra Dam ( Located in MP). For this patent design he was supposed to get a recurring income in the form of royalty but he refused it so that the government could use the money for more developmental projects in the future.

He also worked in various parts of the country such as, in Hyderabad he improved the drainage system, in Mumbai he introduced the block system of irrigation and water weir flood gates. He was also a part of building railway bridge projects and water supply schemes in Bihar and Orissa. In Mysore, he supervised the construction of KRS dam which was the ten Asia’s biggest dam.

Sir M V was also a Diwan of Mysore in 1912 and under his Diwanship Mysore saw major transformations in the field of Agriculture, Irrigation, Industrialization, Education, Banking and Commerce and was known as the ‘Model State”.




Due to his outstanding contribution to the society, Government of India conferred 'Bharat Ratna' on this legend in the year 1955." He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific "sir".

So on this Engineer’s Day lets strive to be better Engineers and increase our curiosity towards science.
